Woodshed: Practice Room for a Musician in San Francisco, CA

The Filbert Steps wind up the side of Telegraph Hill, pausing every so often, allowing the visitor to take a moment to view their surroundings before continuing their journey upwards. The Woodshed rests on one of very few flat terraces along the steps. This spot is a threshold of sorts, marking the distinction between the open, sunny garden below and the densely wooded hillside above. Sunlight pours through the canopy, ensuring a sense of dynamism reflected in the Woodshed itself. The small shelter, a practice room for a single musician, sits perched on its terrace overlooking the San Francisco coastline. The Woodshed, like its site, serves as a series of thresholds, comprised of layers of privacy. The room’s design allows the musician to choose how connected she wants to be with the world around her; whether she is performing for herself, the natural landscape around her, or the visitors moving up and down the steps nearby.
