I spent 2 weeks visiting the Nordic countries, immersing myself in the design culture. I visited ancient sites, museums, libraries, markets, and much more. As a group, we visited a variety of firms and groups with focuses on different aspects of design.

This study abroad program gave me the push I needed to do a longer study abroad program during my Fourth Year. It solidified my interest in Nordic Design and has influenced my design process and projects over the past few years.

I also planned and organized the Nordic Design Program exhibition held in Cowgill Lobby, showcasing our photographs, sketches, and items collected during our travels.

While working on individual studio projects within an office environment, we were also given opportunities to travel throughout the region, tour various design firms, visit construction sites, and experience cultural locations.

This program allowed me to break out of my East Coast bubble and get a glimpse into the way architecture is studied and created ion the West Coast. The firm we were placed with, The Shalleck Collaborative, is known across the country for its role as a theatre consultant, and has been involved in many major projects. We were able to visit and tour several of these projects while living in the Bay Area.

As part of the inaugural San Francisco Summer Studio group, my role in sharing information about my experiences was very important. I co-ran our group's Instagram page (@vtbythebay), which we created to reach a wider audience of students, faculty, alumni, and designers across the world.

The semester was divided between working on studio projects while "home" at the Steger Center in Riva san Vitale, Switzerland, and traveling throughout Europe both as a group and individually. We were given the chance to map out ahead of time which cities we wanted to visit, and which buildings we viewed as most important to see while abroad. We studied these buildings and took turns presenting them to the rest of the studio, both in class and on site, to gain a deeper understanding of the design, the architect, and the cultural and historical impact. On top of the studio project, we each selected a long-term building case study to research, write about, draw, photograph, and share with our peers.

Throughout the semester, I stayed in communication with the Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design, sharing photos and sketches from my group via the School's Instagram page (@archdesignvt).
